Holme Farm is proud to be qualified to deliver the BHS Exam Stage training sessions.

 

Horse Knowledge and Care and Riding Stage 1

What will I learn?

How to:

  • apply the basic principles of horse care
  • look after a well-mannered horse in the stable and at grass (under supervision).
  • ride an experienced horse or pony in an enclosed space.

Note: you need to be at least 14 years old to take this exam.

 

Horse Knowledge and Care and Riding Stage 2

What will I learn?

How to:

  • to apply general principles for the management of horses’ health and well being.
  • care for stabled and grass-kept horses during all seasons of the year (under partial supervision)
  • ride an experienced horse or pony in the open as well as in a manège or indoor school.

Note:

  • you must be at least 16 years old and have completed BHS Stage 1 to take this exam.
  • before entering the riding section you must also have completed your BHS Riding and Road Safety Test.
  • you may be able to gain direct entry into the Stage 2 if you already hold equine qualifications (e.g. Pony Club Tests or Work Based Diplomas). For further information please contact the BHS Education Department on 02476 840508 or via email [email protected]

 

Horse Knowledge and Care and Riding Stage 3

What will I learn?

How to:

  • improve further the skills you acquired in Stages 1 and 2
  • look after up to four horses in stables and at grass in an unsupervised environment, ensuring that horses, stables, yard and fields are safe and in good order.
  • ride a variety of horses in a variety of circumstances.
  • begin to school horses and ride according to the horse’s needs.
  • take informed and effective decisions both in horse care and while riding

Note: you need to be at least 17 years old and have completed BHS Stage 1 and 2 to take this exam.

 

What can I do next?

With the Stage 3 Horse Knowledge, Care and/ or Riding Certificate under your belt you might like to tackle the Stage 4 Horse Knowledge, Care and/or Riding.

For information the:

  • Stage 3 Care Certificate is recognised as a qualification in its own right and counts as a technical certificate towards the Advanced Equine Apprenticeship.
  • Horse Knowledge and Riding Stage 3 is a component part of the BHS Assistant Instructor Certificate.

 

Preliminary Teaching Test

What will I learn?

How to:

  • coach someone effectively
  • develop progressive coaching plans to improve the rider’s horsemanship skills
  • understand and apply the health and safety procedures involved in organising a lesson or hack in the open or on the roads.
  • tailor the session to reflect the needs of the rider
  • evaluate your own performance and the progress your students are making in an unsupervised environment.

This qualification will enable you to work in:

  • a commercial riding establishment
  • private yard
  • or as a freelance coach.

 

Holders of this qualification who have completed a portfolio of evidence are able to:

  • register for and gain the Level 2 (UKCC Endorsed) Certificate in Coaching
  • progress to the BHS Intermediate Teaching Test.

 

Note:

  • Option Oneyou need to be at least 18 years old and have completed Stages 1 and 2 to take this exam
